When Your Roof Takes a Hit,
Who You Call Matters.

Storm damage is stressful enough without trying to figure out who to trust. Brookings Roofing has been roofing across the Upper Midwest since 1968 — including helping homeowners and property managers navigate hail and wind damage and the insurance process that follows.

THE TRUST PROBLEM

After a Storm, Everyone’s a Roofing Contractor.

After a significant storm, contractors appear from everywhere — some local, some not. Most are fine. Some aren’t. The question worth asking isn’t where they’re from. It’s whether they’ll be reachable in two years if something comes up.

Brookings Roofing has been in business since 1968. We’ve built our reputation one roof at a time across the Upper Midwest, and we’re not going anywhere. When we put our name on a job, we stand behind it — next season, next decade.

That’s not a tagline.  It’s a standard we’ve held for decades.

WHAT WE ACTUALLY DO

How We Handle Your Claim, Start to Finish.

Step 1: Initial Damage Assessment

We start with a no-obligation inspection to verify whether you have damage worth pursuing a claim on. We’re not doing a quick walk-around - we’re looking at what adjusters look for. If the damage is there and you’d like us to handle the full process - detailed documentation, estimate building, adjuster coordination - we ask for a simple contingency agreement before we invest that time on your behalf. No cost to you if the claim doesn’t proceed.

Step 2: Damage Documentation

Before your insurance adjuster visits, we prepare a detailed assessment of what we found. This gives your claim the strongest possible foundation and helps prevent the underpayment that happens when damage gets missed on a rushed inspection.

Step 3: Adjuster Coordination

We prioritize being on site when your adjuster visits - it consistently produces better claim outcomes. We know what adjusters look for and we make sure nothing gets overlooked. When scheduling doesn’t allow it, we’ll prepare you for the visit and can request a re-inspection if we disagree with their findings.

Step 4: Claims Paperwork & Scope Review

We handle the paperwork so you’re not decoding insurance line items on your own - but this step is about more than paperwork. It’s about scope.
Insurance adjusters are thorough, but they’re not roofing contractors. Items get missed. Components that should be included in a full replacement - flashing, ventilation, underlayment, drip edge - sometimes don’t make it onto the initial scope. A contractor who simply accepts the adjuster’s assessment and builds to it may deliver a finished roof that’s missing what you’re entitled to.

We review every scope line by line. If something’s missing that should be covered, we document it and go back to the insurance company before work begins, not after.

“You’ve paid premiums for this coverage. Our job is to make sure you actually get what you’re owed.”

Step 5: Quality Installation

Once approved, we install using Malarkey architectural shingles - engineered specifically for the hail, wind, and temperature extremes of the Upper Midwest. We don’t swap in a cheaper product because it’s an insurance job.

Step 6: Final Walkthrough

We walk the completed job with you. If something isn’t right, we make it right before we leave.

WHY MATERIALS MATTER ON A STORM JOB

Your Claim Covers a New Roof. Your Contractor Determines the Quality.

Most contractors treating storm work as a volume play specify the minimum materials required to satisfy the claim and move on. The claim gets closed, the roof gets installed, and the homeowner has no idea they could have had something significantly better for the same insurance payout.

We don’t work that way. The materials that go on your roof determine how it performs over the next 20-30 years - through every hail season, every South Dakota winter, every temperature swing in between. That’s too long a time-frame to accept minimum spec.

We install Malarkey architectural shingles on storm replacements because they’re the right product for this climate - impact-resistant, wind-rated, and built to outperform what most contractors put on an insurance job. We recommend them because they’re the best option for your home. Not because the margin is better.

PREMIUM UPGRADE OPTION

Thinking Beyond the Claim?

For homeowners who want to use this moment to do more than replace like-for-like, we offer stone-coated steel roofing systems as a premium alternative. Engineered for superior impact and wind resistance and built to outlast traditional shingles through decades of Upper Midwest weather - it’s an investment in not having this conversation again after the next storm.

It’s not for everyone. But for the right home and the right homeowner, it changes the calculus entirely.
Ask us about it during your inspection.

COMMERCIAL STORM DAMAGE

Property Manager? We Handle Commercial Storm Damage Too.

Multi-family residential, retail, warehouse, and institutional buildings all face the same hail and wind risks as single-family homes - often with more complex insurance situations and higher stakes if the roof fails.

Brookings Roofing installs commercial membrane systems including TPO, EPDM, and PVC, along with large-scale steel and shingle roofing. We hold GenFlex and MuleHide commercial certifications.

We apply the same documentation-first approach to commercial claims that we bring to residential work, and our crews travel across the Upper Midwest - South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa - for commercial storm response. If you manage multiple properties, we’re worth a conversation before the next storm season.

HONEST ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you get out for an inspection?

It depends on storm volume - after a major hail event we get busy fast, and we’d rather be honest about that than make a promise we can’t keep. Call us as soon as you notice damage. The earlier you’re in the queue, the faster we can get to you. For active leaks or exposed structure, tell us when you call and we’ll prioritize accordingly.

Does my insurance cover this?

Most standard homeowner policies cover hail and wind damage, but coverage depends on your specific policy, deductible, and the extent of the damage. We’ll document what we find and you can make an informed decision from there. We don’t push claims - if the damage doesn’t meet your deductible or isn’t worth pursuing, we’ll tell you that honestly.

What if I’ve already called my insurance company?

That’s fine - call us too. We can still help with documentation, adjuster coordination, and making sure the scope of the claim is accurate before any work is approved.

Do I have to use your company if you do the inspection?

The initial damage assessment is no-obligation. If the damage is there and you’d like us to handle the full process - documentation, adjuster coordination, estimate - we ask for a contingency agreement at that point. But the first visit costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. If you decide to go in a different direction, we wish you well.

Are you a storm chaser?

No. We’re based in Brookings, SD and have been since 1968. We travel for significant storm events across the Upper Midwest when it makes sense - but we operate with the same standards and accountability on every job, wherever it is. The difference between us and a storm chaser isn’t geography. It’s whether they’ll answer the phone two years from now.

What Our Customers Say About Storm Work

“Grant answered and calmed me down immediately by his friendly demeanor and saying he would get to me as soon as possible. He sent out Jake and another worker who inspected my roof already on Friday! Also Monday night sent a couple guys to tarp so no water damage from the rain. I have worked with Grant for years, he’s quick, professional, and so easy to work with.”

Michael Telkamp

“We were one of many houses that had storm damage and needed someone dependable to do the work. This was a well organized, well run, hardworking and conscientious crew. I got text updates as to materials and the schedule. The supplies arrived in the afternoon the day before work was to start. The workers arrived early the next morning and did a phenomenal job. Every facet was done well. I am so glad I selected them to do the work!”

James Merritt

“We just came through a vicious storm, and we didn’t lose one single shingle! These people are pros!”
